ABOUT GRASSHOPPER TRACKS

Picture
Hello!  I'm Tia, and this blog, Grasshopper Tracks, is a place for me to record and share a bit of my experience in this learning journey called life - my varied projects, thoughts, opinions, discoveries, experiences and ideas - as I hop along my own path and as I raise/teach my own little “grasshoppers.”

In slang terms, “grasshopper” can refer to one who is a novice, as student, a protégé.  To my understanding, this use of the term originated with the 1970’s TV show “Kung Fu,” starring David Carradine as a young student at a Shaolin temple who is nicknamed “Grasshopper” by one of the masters there.  I have seen very little of the TV show, but am frequently using the expression “Patience, grasshopper” with myself and my kids.  I’m not sure from where I acquired that particular phrase, but I am very aware of how hypocritical I am when using it with my kids, given my strong tendencies towards impatience…however, the phrase is also a reminder to be gentle with myself when I fail in having patience, since I’m still learning too.  I very much consider myself a “grasshopper” in life, in that I see myself continually learning (and sometimes unlearning or relearning); trying (and sometimes failing or backsliding) to grow in wisdom and understanding; gradually making new discoveries about myself, others and life in general; experiencing successes and failures on the journey; and constantly in progress.

As for a bit about myself, I am currently a stay-at-home parent who previously spent over 10 years working in a corporate job.  I am married with three young children, whom I will refer to as Hopper 1, 2, and 3. I don't claim expertise in many things - please don't assume this blog is intended to share expertise - but rather my interests are varied.  I like to try new things for fun and tend to dabble in several things, which will likely be evident in what I choose to share on this site.  That said, there are certainly some topics that I find much more interesting than others.  I can get impassioned about education; learning activities; equality and social justice issues around gender, race, background, sexuality, disability, religion, socioeconomic status, etc. (I'm particularly passionate about issues involving women and children); living simply and wholeheartedly; and appreciating the outdoors. I enjoy the simple things in life and doubt that anyone has ever used the words "fancy" or "elegant" to describe me.  I place a high value on spending time with my family and doing activities I find fulfilling, which means things like keeping up with the housework, yard work, and the "Joneses" all take a back seat, with the latter holding no interest for me.

In writing this blog, I hope to attempt to articulate some of the lessons, both grand and more trivial, that come to me in this ordinary, often beautiful life.  Hopefully, I'm wise enough to try to learn from others, and maybe once in awhile, what I share might be useful to someone else too.

Thanks for visiting my blog!
